Match Report: Melksham Town vs AFC Totton
By Lewie Simmons
Southern League football returned to Oakfields for the 2021/2022 season as Totton made the journey from the South Coast into the countryside.
The first half was a closely contested affair, with no real clear-cut chances for either side, and a superb display of defending from both backlines as the sides looked evenly matched.
Both teams did have half-chances, one fell for Town’s Phil Ormrod who forced a good save from ‘keeper Lewis Noice, and Sam Griffin was unable to direct his effort into the Melksham net from close range as he attacked a cross at the back post.
Following half time, the game was set up to be an even tighter finish, with a mistake or a piece of magic needed to break the deadlock. A bit of both occurred in the 65th minute, as Melksham ‘keeper Connor Johns tried to shield the ball out of play, but Totton striker Hisham Kasimu managed to nick the ball away from him and did very well to finish into the empty net from the tightest of angles.
Despite late pressure from Town, Totton were able to see the game out as 1-0 victors, making it two in two for the Stags.
